How do I compress photos for Shopify without losing quality?
Short answer: resize the image down to roughly Shopify's own display size (2048px on the long edge covers virtually every theme and zoom view) before exporting, and use JPEG at 80-92% quality rather than squeezing more out of the quality slider alone — an oversized image is the actual cause of most bloated product-photo file sizes, not an under-compressed one.
Why the file stays huge even at a "good" quality setting
A photo straight from a modern phone or camera is often 4000px+ on its long edge — far larger than any Shopify theme will ever display it, even at full-screen zoom. Compression quality and pixel dimensions are two separate levers: dropping quality on a 4000px image still leaves 4000px of detail to encode, so the file stays large no matter how far the quality slider is pushed down, and pushing it too far starts showing visible artifacts before the file gets meaningfully smaller. Resizing first removes pixels that were never going to be seen anyway — that's where the real savings are.
