How do I make a collage from photos with different aspect ratios without cropping them badly?
Short answer: use a layout with variable-size cells, not a fixed grid, and let cells use “Fit” mode to letterbox each photo instead of “Fill”, which crops to match the cell's shape.
Why it happens
A uniform grid forces every photo into identical cell proportions. A portrait photo dropped into a landscape-shaped cell has to lose its top and bottom (Fill) or leave empty space on the sides (Fit) — that's unavoidable geometry, not a bug. The only real choice is which trade-off to make, and where.
How to make it look intentional
- Pick an asymmetric or masonry layout, which sizes cells to roughly match your photos' own proportions instead of forcing a rigid grid on all of them.
- Switch individual cells to “Fit” for photos where cropping would cut off something important — faces, text, the edge of a subject — and reserve “Fill” for photos where a tight crop looks deliberate.
- Add a background color or pattern behind “Fit” cells so the letterbox gaps read as a design choice rather than an empty mistake.
