Why Does My Clone Stamp Leave Visible Circles Instead of a Smooth Blend?

Why the circles show up

The Clone Stamp doesn't paint a continuous line the way it looks on screen — under the hood it's stamping the same round (or star, heart, etc.) shape over and over along the path your mouse travels, at a fixed distance apart. That distance is the Spacing setting, expressed as a percentage of the brush size.

At a low Spacing (10-20%), consecutive stamps overlap by 80-90% of their area, so the seams between them disappear and the result reads as one smooth stroke. At a higher Spacing — the 60-80% range that suits spaced-out decorative shapes — each stamp only barely touches the next one, and with a hard, well-defined edge (high Hardness), that gap between overlaps is exactly what shows up as a chain of separate circles.

This catches people most often after switching brush shapes: some shapes are tuned by default to a wider Spacing because it looks better for that shape, and if you then switch back to a plain round stamp for cloning, the wider Spacing value can still be active.

How to fix it

1. Lower Spacing to 15-20%. This is the single change that fixes almost every case — it forces enough overlap between stamps that the seams stop being visible.
2. Drop Hardness slightly if a faint pattern still shows. A little edge softness (Hardness around 70-80% instead of 100%) blends the overlap zone further, on top of the Spacing fix.
3. Work in shorter, slower strokes on fine detail. Fast drags can occasionally skip past the spacing calculation on very low-powered devices — a shorter, steadier stroke gives the tool time to place every stamp.

If you want a specific decorative shape (star, heart) to still have that spaced-out look elsewhere in your painting, that's normal for those shapes — it's only an issue when it happens on a plain round Clone stamp where you wanted a seamless patch.
